Scully and Mulder settle in and wait for death to arrive. But that doesn’t stop him from tricking her into backing up, and locking himself in the room with the water. Of course, he’s armed with a pipe and Scully has a gun. Eventually Trondheim draws a line in the sand, refusing any more water to Mulder. This leads to tense standoffs between Scully and Trondheim over the remaining water. He got seasick on the way out and was dehydrated as a result, and so something something. They’re trustworthy right?īut Mulder doesn’t stop aging upon finding the better water. At least, that’s what herbal supplements tell me. That easily explains the rust on everything, and also kinda explains the aging, as oxidation is kinda linked to aging. Scully develops a theory that whatever is going on is rapidly speeding the oxidation process. The sewage water is fresh, and not contaminated. It takes Trondheim all of five minutes to kill Olafsson and start drinking from the toilets. Meanwhile, Olafsson is tempting Trondheim with his secrets. Mulder tracks the only non-rusted pipe to a sewage tank, which they theorize contains the only safe drinking water. Mulder, Scully, and Trondheim begin aging, and captain Barclay dies. Why they didn’t take Olafsson is not clear. They assume that his friends stole Trondheim’s boat. This fellow is Olafsson, a shady captain in his own right, and one who has not aged. So when Trondheim goes to give the mate a burial at sea he’s attacked by another dude. He’s clearly too frail to have killed the mate. Eventually they find captain Barclay, aged horribly and clutching a bottle of Jack Daniels like a lifeline. They find him with a staved in skull, and hear someone moving around. It’s at this point that Trondheim’s mate screams from another deck. It’s at this point that Trondheim’s boat drives away leaving our gang trapped on a useless ship that may be experiencing time dilation. Mummified even, as when Scully goes to get a sample a hand breaks off. They go belowdecks, hunting for clues as to why a brand new naval vessel is a rusted out derelict, and there they find a bunch of very old bodies. And in a massive fog they eventually find the destroyer, but it’s just a drifting hulk. When they get there they charter a boat with a captain Trondheim. Oh, and they don’t tell Skinner, because the FBI has no jurisdiction over Norway. Mulder’s theories are all really far fetched, more so than usual, but they’re centered on the Philadelphia Experiment, which is always a fun time. This leads Mulder and Scully to hit the waters off the coast of Norway, hoping to find a connection between this case and various other disappearances over the years. Mulder gets wind of it, and Scully gets a little info for him before they get shut down by the Navy. They’re picked up by a Canadian fishing boat horribly aged. Navy destroyer(!) that involves a chunk of the crew fleeing something that is killing their fellow crew. The episode begins with a mutiny aboard a U.S. As we’ve proven time and again, when a monster of the week is all about horror the episode turns out good. I think I’ll get to the nitpicks at the end this time, and just spend some time enjoying the X-Files being really good. Well, actually, a lot of stuff in this episode doesn’t make any sense, but the atmosphere cancels much of it out. Looks like we have another awesome horror situation.
